Derby’s stunning Silk Mill building stands on the site of the world’s first factory and is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
The Silk Mill is undergoing a process of significant development to create Derby Silk Mill – Museum of Making due to open in summer 2020.
The museum team asked us to review the proposed plans and give feedback from a ‘pan-disability’ perspective.
Working with project consultants and user groups we made suggestions as to how the museum design could be improved to provide a more inclusive experience.
Amongst our suggestions were the inclusion of a Changing Places hoisted toilet facility, needed by 250,000 people in the U.K. and the provision of a ‘Quiet Room’ for visitors on the autism spectrum.
As the project moves forward, we look forward to seeing the design develop and come to fruition as an exemplary, accessible destination.
